The Kings Arms Inn has been a thriving pub in the past, attracting custom from Stockland and more widely across Devon and further afield, with a deserved reputation for good food.

However, more recently, a succession of occupants presided over a cycle of short-term tenancies followed by closure, which led to a sharp decline in its reputation. The current situation is that the pub has been closed since March 2013.

Following the last closure, at the request of Stockland Parish Council, the Kings Arms was listed as an Asset of Community Value (ACV) by East Devon District Council (EDDC) – the first such listing in East Devon.

Since its formation in 2013, SCPL has led the community in opposing the various planning proposals for the redevelopment of the site for residential purposes. Following the result of the Planning Appeal Public Hearing in September 2017 the owners have entered into discussions with SCPL regarding the sale of the entire site.
