The Kings Arms is Open

A LOOK BACK AT THE OPENING WEEK

This week has been one to remember, as SCPL shareholders, the Management Committee, lenders, contractors, volunteers and the wider community were able to finally enjoy the fruits of our collective labour! Monday was a very emotional one for many of us, as we remembered those people who were part of the journey but who are sadly now no longer with us, especially Peter Maitland.  It was great to see so many people in the pub, and to meet old friends, and just to see the building full of joy and laughter once again.

The opening party continued on Tuesday, at a slightly more calmer and leisurely pace.

Wednesday was the official opening night, and Committee members past and present and their partners enjoyed a lovely meal in the Cotley Room – thank you Richard & John! There was a good crowd in the Farmers Bar after we finished, and again the pub was very lively.

Thursday saw the first lunch service, which attracted a good few people, as did the evening service, and of course Friday night was very lively in both bars, and with a very busy dining service.

We think the tenants have done a great job, and the addition of the New Bar has really enhanced the atmosphere and there is now a natural flow between it and the Farmers Bar. We noticed that the new tables and settles in ‘The Street’ were also in use on Friday as a quieter area away from the busy bars – another good idea from Ben, Tony and Richard.

  • I’m reading your wonderful news on the opening of the Kngs Arms in Stockland from my home in Goolwa, South Australia. I left Exeter in 1965 as a child. Over the past twelve months I’ve been working on my family tree and discovered many of my ancestors reigned from this area of East Devon working as agricultural labourers.
I wish you all the very best on this wonderful journey and look forward to popping in on my next visit ‘home’!
